Florida Day at St. Thomas

Today I had the pleasure of participating in "Florida Day" at St. Thomas Episcopal Elementary. The 4th graders at the school have been learning a lot about where their food comes from this year, including growing their own school garden, field trips to different farms, and even a field trip to the Port of Miami to see what kind of produce comes into our city that way. So to bring all of those activities together, they threw an amazing "Florida Day" celebration, and I was there to help them plant something quintessentially Southern... Pole Beans. Well, I'm sure Okra or Collards could be voted more Southern, but Beans grow more quickly ;). The great part was I had a wonderful helper, my young cousin Staffan!

I think the students had a fantastic time at Florida Day!

Artists at the Falls ushers in Spring!

Nothing like starting your week off with a really fantastic Monday! Today I was lucky enough to have one of those... I spent the morning with a bushel (hehe) of wonderful little artists, transforming a wooden garden box into a masterpiece of art for the Artists at the Falls studio front herb garden. Artists at the Falls is holding their annual Spring Art Camp this week, and I was fortunate enough to be invited as the guest gardener for today's "Garden of Art" theme. The camp goers painted three different Van Gogh paintings on each side of the garden box. Then we filled it with Lemon Balm, Lavender, Basil, Thyme, and Marigolds! At the end, I was stunned at the talent these little ones have; of course with an Art teacher like Talia, you learn from the best!

Gardening at Richmond

Recently, I started working with the Agri-Science department at Richmond Heights Middle School. This school is a fantastic magnet school with a variety of amazing programs for their students, like the Agri-science program and Zoo Miami. In the Agriculture department, they raise their own chickens + rabbits, they have a large garden area, and a beautiful seed starting shade house. They have had a few set backs and issues with their gardens, so I'm here to help them get back on track. This week, we focused on the small square foot garden. The soil in this garden was a poor quality compost, and it has stunted over half of the plants they have been trying to grow since October of last year. The carrots were still teeny tiny, the peppers, lettuce, and onions as well. So we removed everything that wasn't doing well, and amended the soil with good compost + organic fertilizer, and reseeded with a few warm weather crops like black eyed peas, okra, and beans. My favorite part of the day was gardening amongst all the chickens, who were happily pecking about.

This is just the beginning of the garden overhaul at Richmond Heights Middle, and I am excited for what's to come! Stay tuned :)

The Victorian Kitchen Garden

This is my new obsession. I was told about this BBC program from the 70's by the farmer I stayed with last summer in Sussex, England. The Victorian Kitchen Garden is such a beautiful series! Although we have different gardening challenges in S. FL, there is still so much to learn from the innovative Victorian gardeners. I love the head gardener in this program, Harry Dodson, he seems so calm, sweet, and of course knowledgeable!

There are videos for every month of the year, but July + August are beautiful months in an English garden so here are those...

I love it. Food is what got me serious about edible gardening. So because good food and cooking is one of the main inspirations for the way I garden, I'd like to start sharing some recipes I'm crazy about.

Here's the first one. I know oatmeal may seem a bit insignificant, but when you have really good oatmeal, there's no other breakfast like it (or sometimes dinner for me ha).

note: I made this recipe with milk instead of water, and dried figs instead of cherries...

Gray Gardens

So it seems my new years resolution has hit a bumpy patch in the road, as I have not posted anything in a week, maybe a week & a half? Geesh, this is something I really need to work on because obviously I am lacking discipline in this area. Anyway, while I have not been on this little blog writing, gardens have still been growing in the world outside. Here are some photos of the Gray family's garden.

I was recommended to the Gray family last year by Lori the Kitchen Counselor. From the moment I met them, I knew they were going to be wonderful to work with. They are another one of my *star clients because they go out to their garden every day to check on it. If you have a healthy garden ecosystem like they do, most days there is not much to do in the garden other than a quick pest check and water, but the Gray family goes beyond that. They stroke their tomato plants to ensure pollination, and because tomato plants release a chemical that triggers growth when they are touched. They talk to their plants, telling them they are growing beautifully. They just bring such a positive energy to their garden, that I have come to see is the slight difference between all the gardens I maintain. I am so grateful to Lori for making this connection; I have not only gained fantastic clients, but new friends in the Gray family.

ps. They even made me a cd of photos from our installation day entitled "Our Organic Garden" planted by Seed.Root.Grow. So sweet, gotta love 'em!

Glaser Family Garden

This garden belongs to a wonderful family of six. All four children (even the 1 yr old teeny tot) got their hands dirty and helped me install it back in October, they had so much fun! One of the elder siblings still loves to come out and help me when I'm over for maintenance, she is so cute and enthusiastic about the garden. This garden is obviously too small to provide enough food for the family to be self sufficient, but like I advise all of my clients who are first time gardeners, it is much better to start small because it will ensure greater success. And that is just what is happening with the Glacer family garden :)! On Saturday we will be harvesting their first batch of cauliflower, along with the 3rd or 4th batch of arugula greens, kale and escarole! We have some sunlight limitations, so that has been a factor in the slower production, but everything is well on its way!

A Farm Grows in Brooklyn

The article made me worried that the booming culture of urban farming is under great threat. Well it probably is in some areas, but in Brooklyn, NY the urban farmer seems to be celebrated, & to my delight growing just fine.

Meet Lampascioni, the Italian Wild Onion...

As a kid I hated onions. I mean absolutely couldn't stand them in any dish, in any way. When I began to get really interested in cooking, I started to notice that the base flavor for almost anything savory, is the onion (and of course the almighty garlic). And slowly but surely, I have come to adore onions, not surprisingly. So when I read this post on You Grow Girl about an Italian wild onion I got really excited; and then got more excited when I read they can be grown in zones 6 and higher! Now I just have to see where I can get my hands on some bulbs or seeds...

In hopes of owning a few of my own chickens in the near future, it is news like this that brings the dream of a simple, self sustainable lifestyle down a notch. Of course, I can always take up residence in the middle of nowhere (does that truly still exist in the US?), but having spent all of my life in a fairly urban setting, I have come to love, and need the cultural interactions that only a "city" seems to provide. I am completely split in half between the need for quiet, beautiful nature and loud, bustling, café lined streets. It seems I cannot be away from either for too long or my soul begins to suffer. With the realization of this somewhat burdensome duality, I can only attempt a life of balance in both aspects. Having 3 chickens instead of 20 in a more urban area is along the lines of thought... However, more and more articles like this one are showing me that for now, it is going to be more difficult to have my cake and eat it too...

Garden Angel

My client Lynn, who is awesome by the way, calls me her garden angel. It is so sweet, and I am having such a great time tending to her beautiful garden that I installed a few months ago. She is so enthusiastic about her garden; she has been doing an amazing job of tending to it everyday that I am not there. Which is really important and is something a lot of people don't realize about having a garden. Lynn has been harvesting lettuce frequently for about 2 months, and next week we'll probably be able to harvest some broccoli. Her tomatoes, peppers, and cauliflower are producing nicely, and should be ready soon as well. We're letting one batch of the lettuce go to seed so we can save them and re-plant. Here are some photos from past to present...

Potatoes. I absolutely adore root veggies; carrots, parsnips, beets, radishes... But the potato, what can I say... I love them mashed, roasted, au gratin, and even boiled plain with some olive oil. There are about 4,000 different varieties of potatoes in the world, it is a shame most people only see what, two or three varieties in supermarkets here in the US.

I've got potatoes on the brain today because a client asked me yesterday how she would know when her potatoes are ready for harvest. She's been tending to her garden on her own for months now; all I did was give her a consultation on where to start, set her up with a raised bed and on she went! So to answer this very good question I'll direct you all to one of my favorite gardening blogs, Fennel & Fern. They have these adorable growing cards that you can print and have with you in the garden! (There is a typo in this card, it says tomatoes where it's supposed to say potatoes... don't get confused :).

Hello!

Sorry it's been so long without a post. I hope the holidays were wonderful for you all, and here's to having a fantastic 2011! One of my resolutions is to be more active in this crazy world of blogging/social networking... It's something I feel I really need to work on because I am just not naturally inclined to socializing this way (or many other ways for that matter), I rather be outside with my plants & cats. My cat Blue is pictured above; I'll have to post a photo of my other feline, Capucine, another day :).

Anyway, I promise my post tomorrow will be full of gardens!

Kitchen Gardens Sprouting up in Miami

The growing season in Miami is really getting underway! The cool weather is finally here and looks like it will be staying for a while, phew!

It was so exciting to hear that my clients harvested some things from their garden for Thanksgiving dinner! I Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday/growing season thus far. Remember Seed.Root.Grow if you're stumped on holiday gift ideas; a garden is definitely a unique gift that will give in so many ways, and keep on giving!

Dreaming in a Hamlet

While the weather is slowly but surely turning to my favorite time of year here in South Florida, I can't help but catch myself still day dreaming about my summer in Europe. And with a dear friend traveling through that amazing continent right now, I am feeling even more nostalgic than usual. As I mentioned before, I was working on an organic sheep farm in East Sussex, England for three weeks. But what you don't know is that I was fortunate enough to visit a place I have dreamt of experiencing since I was a teenager: Paris.

Oh Paris... from the language to the architecture, to the food, I have always found an intense draw toward French culture. So when I crossed the English Channel in my EuroStar train, came out of that dark tunnel, and saw the signs of French countryside, it felt like a lifetime dream coming true (although it's only been a quarter of a lifetime in my case).

To no surprise, Paris was even more than I had built it up to be. And while the city's wonderful Parisian energy was perfectly satisfying, of course as a gardener, a trip to Paris would not be complete without a stop to the outskirts, at Versailles Palace gardens. I didn't have time to explore the interior of the palace (nor the space; it was summer, and the whole world was gathered at the palace), but the interior was not my mission anyway. I was there to see the breathtaking little village and farm where Marie Antoinette spent so much of her time. They still grow many crops there, in beautifully arranged kitchen gardens surrounding the historic buildings. By far my favorite area of the palace. So in celebration of my friends travels, and my nostalgia, here are some photos from the Versailles gardens.

Morning Call Bakery Gets Growing!

Hello!

The first garden of the fall 2010 growing season is down! And I'm very excited because it happens to be located in the back patio entrance of one of my favorite bakeries here in Miami, Morning Call Bakery!

I first fell in love with Morning Call a few years ago when I walked in and discovered it's small, cozy and adorable french charm. I loved that you could sit outside at a tiny cafe table while enjoying an incredible soup + sandwich meal! So when I met the wonderful owner, Christina, and proposed installing an herb garden for the bakery, she pointed me in the direction of her back patio (which I hadn't even known existed!). What was back there was a bit of an overgrown mess, with some invasive exotics like the Brazillian Pepper mixed in. Yikes! So I went to work, and here's how it turned out :)...

From South Beach to East Sussex...

It was truly a dream come true for me to have experienced life on an East Sussex farm this summer. Beech Hill farm is an organically run 20 acre sheep farm. British rare breed Wensleydale Longwools are raised here for their fleece. They are gorgeous and ever so sweet animals. The farm also raises about 2.5 acres of veg for their own consumption. I loved my time at Beech Hill, and have been missing it terribly. As promised, here are a my favorite photos from my stay at the farm. The first three photos were taken at Michraham's Priory (just a short drive from the farm), where they had a beautiful victorian kitchen garden.

Hello! Yes, I am back from Europe. Sadly... What an incredible journey I have experienced! And I left Europe feeling like I was leaving my home rather than returning to it. Just Think of England...

About a month ago, my best friend told me about this thing people say when things aren't going too well; "Just think of England". I'm excited to say that I can finally say that sort of thing and know what I'm supposed to be thinking about when I think of England. I've been in East Sussex for the past week doing a short apprenticeship on an organically run sheep farm called Beech Hill Farm.

I can't believe I'm finally here. I have been preparing for this trip for a little over 6 months. I have been fortunate to have traveled to a good many places in the States, and while California is one of the most beautiful places I have laid eyes on thus far, East Sussex countryside may actually beat it out in the breathtaking department. I am so grateful to be experiencing this.

Julia Desch raises a rare British breed of sheep called Wenslydale Longwools. They are amazing animals. Julia is extremely knowledgeable about them, and the fleece they provide. She also grows about 2.5 acres of veg & fruit, and generally strives to be as self sustainable as possible. I have been working on over hauling the veg garden; putting in new layers of compost (sheep manure that's been curing for 4 yrs), and of course sowing new crops. I'm learning so much here from Julia.

Do Not Use Sentry Natural Defense On Your Cat!

So I normally don't even bathe my cat because he does a good job of keeping himself clean. But he is an indoor/outdoor cat, and it being summer, we've found a few fleas on him. So we decide to take him a bath and put some flea control on him. I went to Petco and found this nice looking "100% Natural" product called Sentry Natural Defense. I read the ingredients because I know better than to believe what's written largely on the box, and sure enough found that it contains essential oils like peppermint and clove. When I put it on my cat Blue, he freaked out. The smell was so strong it permeated the entire house. And Blue was literally running away from himself. He even started foaming a bit at the mouth. I knew something was wrong, so I began wiping him down with a wet cloth. After repeated wiping and rinsing, the smell is a little better and he definitely felt better. After that, I immediately started researching this product & the ingredients, and found that essential oils are toxic to cats! I'll have to monitor him for a while and make sure he is okay. He seems fine now, just angry.

Also, the smell is still on my own hands after repeated washing, and I have had a slight, but very note worthy headache for about an hour now.

Lessons learned:
1. If your cat or dog does not have an infestation of fleas, do not put anything on them! Simply bathe them and keep as clean as possible. I use this method in the garden, I don't know why I decided to do differently on my cat.
2. Research, Research, Research. Too often I go directly to the natural remedies without researching because I think "hey it can't be bad, it's natural".
3. Use Diatomaceous Earth. I use this in the garden all the time to battle all kinds of pests including aphids, snails, mites, etc. But I forgot that it is also perfectly safe and effective for use on your pets.

Pesto Lovers Beware!

Basil is one of those herbs just about anyone can recognize and love. It makes a simple salad of tomatoes and mozzarella (goat cheese in my case), taste like a 5 star culinary experience. It kicks up a quick butter & garlic pasta dish. And among many other things, it provides the base to everyone's favorite green sauce, Pesto.

Basil is also an herb that new gardeners find quite easy to have success with. But, something is plaguing our favorite herb! Basil Blight. I've already had problems with this in my own garden, as well as some clients' gardens. It is quick, and determined. It's spores spread through wind, & multiply fast, making it quite impossible to prevent. So gardeners beware!

I'll soon be across that big blue pond, in East Sussex, England having the amazing opportunity of working on an organic farm for 4 weeks! Julia Desch owns Beech Hill, a "small" 20 acre farm where she raises rare breed Wensleydale Sheep and organic veggies and fruits. She makes/sells organic yarn from her sheep, and sells organic produce to local markets. I'm sure to learn so much from her! I'll be posting when I can from the farm, so stay tuned! Mater Academy East Elementary is Growing Herbs!

After the success Mater Academy East Elementary had with the small vegetable garden I installed back in October of 2009, they decided it was well worth removing a wall of shrubs on the south side of the school, to install an herb garden. This time, a group of five 5th grade students helped me with the entire installation. The students were chosen through an essay competition where they had to discuss what they have gained from their experience with the school's organic vegetable garden. It was so much fun to work with the students, they were so excited to get their hands dirty and learn!

Since installation back in February, the herb garden has really taken off! And the students of Ms. Valladares' 5th grade science class can already identify all of the herbs in the garden! Last week they also helped me harvest the lettuce seeds from the lettuce that we grew in their veg garden. They were so stunned and intrigued with the whole idea of the seeds turning into lettuce.

Residents of the herb garden are: Oregano, Marjoram, Spearmint, Chocolate Mint, Lemon Balm, Parsley (flat and curly), Culantro, Cilantro, Dill, Lavender, English Thyme, Rosemary, Chives (garlic & onion), Sage, and Borage.

Confronting Summer Heat... It's Not Easy...

The heat is moving in fast! But here are some things you can do in the garden: It's a good time to plant sweet potatoes, okra, hot peppers and perennial herbs like Rosemary. Come July, you can start your pumpkins! Summer is also a great time to focus on small container gardening. You can grow a lot in small containers; the best part is the ability to move your plants to the shade during the hottest part of the day, or during one of our common torrential summer downpours!

For me, I like to use the summer to grow a little, but mostly to plan out my fall garden. I spend hours inspecting seed catalogues, deciding what I'd like to plant again, and what I'd like to experiment with. I also like to use the summer to grow cover crops in my beds, then turn them under the soil as green manure about a month before the fall garden gets planted. If you need any help during this very trying time in the garden, don't hesitate to give Seed.Root.Grow a ring!!

Harvested the last of my carrots for the season today... Sad to see them go, but excited for the wax beans I am growing in their place. I grew two french varieties of carrot this season, Scarlet Nantes (the thin, long ones), and one named Chantilly I believe (my garden marker got a bit damaged and I can't read what is written). Both varieties were a lot of fun to grow!

I was really excited to pass by my client Lori's home today. Lori is The Kitchen Counselor, she holds cooking lectures, and the only thing missing in her cooking was being able to have some of her ingredients at her fingertips. So back in January she called me! I was so excited to see how much her garden has grown since I installed it! She also deserves a lot of credit for her diligence in tending to it these past 4 months; it is not as easy as one thinks to go out everyday and make sure everything is in order around the garden... She has done a great job! And, she says she is so hooked on her delicious backyard produce, she wants me to come back in the fall to expand her garden!

A Garden After My Own Heart

Oh my it has been a while since my last post... I have been busy starting up some plants to sell as transplants for this growing season, which I cannot wait any longer for! I've sowed peppers, tomatoes, beets, carrots, okra, broccoli, and a few others, and they are all doing wonderfully despite this heat. I still have so much more that I want to get started on so that they will be ready for the first customers of the season.

I also just returned from a fantastic trip to the Northeast, where I had the great opportunity to visit America's first botanical garden. Bartram's Garden (located in Philadelphia, Pa) is stunning. It isn't exactly a flashy garden that shouts at you with exotics and plants you would never imagine exist on this planet. Instead it is quiet, it's inhabitants are recognizable and yet it is so magical and surreal. You feel as though you are in the world of Monet. Anyway, time to come out of my dream... New Flyers

Over the weekend, I finally got around to taking new photos for all of my flyers/promo ideas. My beautiful cousins were great sports and endured the heat and swarms of mosquitos to be my models. They did an awesome job. If I had an amazing digital camera like my aunt's who let me borrow hers to take these photos, I would be changing around my flyers every month! I love taking photographs and designing "ads" I guess you could say. And even more when the theme is gardening. I'm Knee Deep In SEEDS!

And I love it! A friend of the family just gave me a bucket load of Native Everglades Tomatoes from her house. I cleaned them out today and now have about 300 (rough estimate, I'm terrible with numbers.) little seeds to save! She actually tells me she had a yard full of the plants when she moved into her house and now she is down to a few plants through years of having to sacrifice them for other flora. Still, more than she can handle she says, with the overflowing amount of tomatoes she has all year! I'm telling you all, if you live in the sub-tropical south (somewhere like say MIAMI) where most tomatoes won't dare give you as much as a pretty little yellow flower during these steaming hot days and nights of summer, you need to get yourself a Native Everglades Tomato plant (or two, or three). The bite size cherry tomatoes are guaranteed to greet you every month of the year. And while they are very small, their burst of flavor rivals any beefsteak tomato in my book. The Garden is Thriving

Hey Folks,
Wow it has been a while. I don't know what has delayed my updates until now, maybe it was sheer laziness. Although I haven't been posting, I have continued to document the progress in the garden. And boy has there been progress! It is so exciting to see everything growing. I'm actually beginning to feel sad at the thought that the season is soon to be over here in Miami. But I'm not going to go into gardening hybernation just because it gets too hot, I plan on experimenting with crops like sweet potato that are said to tolerate the Miami heat in the summer.

Here are photos of the garden and all the progress it has made. I've attempted to arrange them in some sort of timeline... These are still a bit old, I have yet to take photos this month.

I finally have a garden knome in the garden! He's being taken away by some alien garden pests... My mom bought this for me. This is a new project for Tiny Green Thumbs. It is going to be a bean teepee! We will plant beans and as they grow up the poles they will create the walls of the teepee.
This is the native Fl. Everglades tomato that I have been so excited about... It is doing great! It is FULL of berry size tomatoes that are super sweet! I think it's a must have for any Miami garden.

Things have been really progressing in the garden these days. Over the weekend I made two salads from the lettuces in my garden and they were absolutely delicious! But what I'm really excited for are the tomatoes. Soon, soon, soon! By the way, an update on my pet owl Oliver (well, not exactly my pet but I named him anyway...); he was hanging out in my neighbor's backyard the other night. This is the third sighting.

Here are some of the first green pepper plants that I sowed this season. I finally got them into a permanent home. The first tomato of the season!The eggplants bel0w have flowers!

So last night around 10:00 pm I went outside to check up on my tomato plants. As I approached the box with my flash light in hand, I see a small owl fly from one of the wooden posts I have supporting the tomatoes, up to the coconut palm right next to the box. I couldn't believe it, I got so excited. When I told my mom, she said my dad had seen the owl a few days back swoop down from the same coconut palm onto our lawn. I live in the very condensed Miami, Fl so I've only ever seen an owl in the neighborhood one other time. To think I may have one residing in a tree in my own back yard, well that's good enough to say I have an owl as a pet! Hmm what should I name him?

Hey Folks!

The weather is amazing here in Miami right now! So many of my plants are growing and looking great. The students of Tiny Green Thumbs have been planting their little fingers off and they are so excited to be taking home their seedlings this week.

Here are some of the seedlings sown by the Tiny Green Thumbs students:

So I cheated a little bit this weekend... I'm usually pretty strict with myself when doing things from "scratch"; cooking, baking, and gardening... Therefore I almost always sow my own seeds, but a parent of one of my student's told me about all the great seedlings she bought at our local nursery for her own garden. So the temptation boiled over and I went on Sunday to the nursery and walked out with my mini full of lovely plants!

Garden Updates

Hello everyone : I'm glad to finally have a chance to update... A lot has been going on in the garden and we are finally starting to feel the "Miami" Fall weather! Tiny Green Thumbs classes are going great; so far we have sowed carrots, green peppers, tomatoes, sunflowers, squash and pumpkin and most of them have already sprouted! I will post photos of those up soon... Other than that, I've been doing much gardening on my own and I've gotten a lot done, take a look :

This weekend I finally got around to cleaning out this beautiful armour that used to be in my room but has been sitting in our garage for years filled with all kinds of stuff we never use, like my dad's racket-ball equipment circa 1980's, hundreds of cds (pre-ipod), baseball bats and gloves, etc... So I gave it a good cleaning and now it happily holds most of the Tiny Green Thumbs gardening supplies (minus huge bags of soil...)! I'm so excited about it because before, all of my stuff was sitting in big shipping boxes and completely unorganized!

Below are more photos of some of the plants that are growing up pretty quickly... Also a little update on the Fl Everglades Native Tomato: The second batch has sprouted!! I haven't had a chance to take their picture, but they look strong and healthy and I am so happy they have finally emerged! The first batch by the way, has not even peaked out yet, so I have a sneaky suspicion they are duds...

Hello all,

My seedlings are doing great and I've transplanted them from the small containers they sprouted in, to bigger peat pots where they will be transplanted into the garden in a couple of weeks. Although just about all the seeds have sprouted, the Fl Everglades Native Tomato has not yet come out and said hello! I am slightly frustrated because that is the ONE crop I really want to experiment with in my garden. The packet did say it could take up to 25 days to germinate so I still have hope, but just to make sure it isn't a bad batch of seeds I planted 10 more seeds from another packet a couple of days ago, so let's cross our fingers they sprout...

I'm also very excited for the first class of the Tiny Green Thumbs 2008-2009 season to begin on Saturday October 11! A few spots in the class have already been secured by some of my students from last season and I can't wait to be gardening with them again! I can feel this is going to be a very fruitfull season...

First seeds of the season

Yesterday I finally started some seeds which will hopefully be ready for transplant into the garden in 6-8 weeks. I used the soilless mix that I ordered from Johnnyseed.com. I'm starting with the Native Florida Everglades tomato as well as a couple of other heirloom tomatoes, bi-colored sweet corn, zucchini squash, pumpkin, long carrots, and broccoli. By the end of this week I also want to start cucumbers, green peppers, jalapeños, and another batch of tomatoes. I think I am going to go tomato crazy this season... Next week I plan on doing the herbs (basil, sage, rosemary, chives, and yarrow). I'm leaving the lettuces for last since lettuce likes much cooler temperatures. My goal is to have some nice size transplants ready for the students of Tiny Green Thumbs to relocate to the garden so they can learn about the planning process.

Woo Hoo For Veggie Gardening In S. Fl

So yesterday I attended an awesome and very informative class at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden called "How to Grow Vegetables in South Florida". I loved it. I found out a few reasons why I am having some problems with pests and more importantly how to deal with them in an organic, sustainable way. I learned about some good organic products to use in the garden which I had been researching an could not find any that came with a recommendation. Some of my classmates seemed like seasoned gardeners and gave me really good tips. I was given more info on the Everglades native tomato that I have been itching to put in my garden. Though forewarned that this tiny tomato has invader tendencies and must be given lots of room to grow, a classmate told me that it packs such a delicious punch of flavor it is well worth surrendering the space; plus it supposedly gives tons of fruit in the hot summer months unlike other varieties that can't stand the heat in the Florida kitchen... I highly recommend this class when it is offered again, it is taught by Elaine Farquharson who by the way was very entertaining and funny. She is teaching another class there in October that I will be attending strictly on growing tomatoes!!! I forgot the name but when I get it I will let you all know. Hey Folks,

I've created this blog to act as a mini website for all of my students and their parents. As well as any of you who are interested in gardening and the environment. I am not by any means an expert, but I do love learning about growing delicious food in your own backyard and anything I can do to live more sustainably. Located in Miami, Fl Tiny Green Thumbs is a children's organic gardening class where we grow our own veggies, herbs, flowers and soon, fruit. The class is small right now, but that's just how I like it. We grow everything organically and focus on how to be more environmentally sustainable.
